3 Eco-Swaps for the Family Kitchen

In the light of children across the UK taking strike from school to protest climate change and call on our government to declare the climate problem as a national emergency, I thought I’d make a post that would help anyone, no matter the age, discover some simple changes they can do that will make their day-to-day routine more eco-friendly and even reduce plastic waste.

I completely understand and agree with the voices that are speaking out in these strikes. It makes me feel a lot more hopeful about the future generation – seeing how many children and teenagers are speaking out and protesting. I hope because of this schools, youth centres and youth groups will take more initiative to teach both students and staff the little changes they can make to help them feel more at ease and less helpless.

Now, I’m not personally a mother myself and I can’t imagine that happening for a couple more years as I still feel like a child myself at the age of 23. However, from being so close to my older sister who is both a mum of my two amazing nieces but also a fierce, awesome eco-activist, I have heard of a couple of ideas that can make the kitchen and lunchtime more eco-friendly for both adults, teenagers and children. Here are 3 tips you may find useful!

Switch from clingfilm to Beeswax Wraps

Now, in all honesty, I have yet to try this tip mainly because it’s very rare that I use clingfilm at the moment. I tend to put my leftovers in tupperware boxes in the fridge and my sandwich for work goes in a container where it doesn’t touch any other food so I’ve yet to feel the need for clingfilm or sandwich bags. However, as a kid for my packed lunches, my mum would always put my banana sandwiches (I was a strange child ok – that’s for another story) in a plastic sandwich bag that would be disposed of pretty much after I had eaten it. But with beeswax wraps you can wash and reuse them, they keep your food as fresh as clingfilm and if at some point you feel you really cannot reuse or re-pasturise yours anymore – you can pop it in the compost!

Encourage the use of reusable water bottles

I bloody loved cartons of Ribena as a child. Or the occasional capri-sun. Even in high school, I’d look forward to having an Innocent smoothie carton at lunchtime. The carton that I only had because I’d pester my mum to buy me a pack of them in Tescos at age 14 because they were ‘healthy’ and ‘cool’. However, there are some ways you could start encouraging either your kids or even yourself to skip the plastic bottles and cartons of drinks in your lunches and go back to refilling and reusing a water bottle. Chilly’s Bottles are beginning to become all the rage now however any BPA-free water bottle will do and they’re quite easy to find online. Eco online store FROG: Friends of Gaia do some nice stainless steel ones.

Once you’ve got yourself into the habit of using your reusable water bottle -why not spice things up by trying different water infusions? I personally love putting lemon slices in water but you could try strawberry slices and mint leaf, lime slices, cucumber and lemon or maybe even kiwi! Here are some fab ideas that even the kids might like!

Take on Meat-Free Monday… or Tuesday, Wednesday or whichever

Although it has been proven quite a few times that meat consumption and animal agriculture has a huge impact on the environment and that going vegetarian or vegan may be a good step if you want to shrink your carbon footprint; it is understandable that some people, especially families with children who are still quite picky about what they eat or may prefer eating particular meals to fit in with the other kids lunches at school, may struggle going completely cold turkey (pardon the pun) and transitioning to a plant-based household. It has been said that if ‘10 million people swapped meat to a plant-based protein for one meal‘ the impact would include reducing water usage by 13 million tonnes! Easy meat-free swaps for lunches

So to make your kitchen time more earth-friendly, how about making one day of the week a meat free day! Quorn do sandwich fillings that are quick and easy things to put in the kids sandwiches instead of ham or turkey – such as their Vegan Chicken-Free Slices or Vegetarian Ham Slices (£1.50 Tesco) or for a snack for either you or the kids you could use the Quorn Vegetarian Cocktail Sausages or Cauldron’s Falafel Bites (£2 Sainsburys). For dinner you could make a vegetable stir fry with all the good stuff like peppers, beansprouts, spring onions, carrots and tenderstem broccoli – the more colours, the better. There’s so many meat-free options that are tasty enough for the kids and you!

So that’s my 3 tips! The fight to be more environmentally-friendly is never a competition and don’t think you have to go throwing all your food out the window and blow tons of money on new Tupperware just to food prep. The easiest way to reduce your carbon footprint is to start off small and work up because that helps you build habits faster. How to be nicer to Planet Earth 🌍

I want to do better.

I want to see others do better. But at the end of it all, the change I can make begins and ends with me. I can share petitions and news articles on social media. I can write down my feelings on it. I can then blog and publish those feelings like I’m doing right now online. I can sneakily suggest more eco-friendly products to others or the benefits of going vegetarian or vegan in hopes that it might stick in someones brain but does all of that matter if I’m not working hard at the same time? Being good to the environment is an attitude that needs to be practiced regularly to really see and understand the benefits and at this point in time I would love to see some benefits, although it may take a while, maybe a year or maybe more. But to know I’m going out of my regular routine to practice a new one that is better to the world I live in, I imagine would be a really rewarding feeling.

But also the less selfish reason is that the world really needs these routines in humans right now. We are causing all of this destruction, all of these horrible changes, all of this dangerous weather and all this harm to other beings that just want to live as much as we do. I think sometimes we forget that we are in danger as much as other endangered animals. I think humans like to think we are indestructible or that we should just accept all of this because it’s inevitable. But we need to hold on to that glimmer of hope that we can change something. There is plenty of studies that prove there would be benefits if we acted in different ways. If we were to reverse the amount of plastic in the sea. If we were to use the land we use for feeding animals for agriculture for actually feeding humans. If we were to not let the world heat up anymore than it already is. Scientists keep trying to tell us that there is hope out there if we all worked collectively, it’s just sad a lot of higher-ups won’t listen. It’s even sadder that we rely on them and don’t realise we can make a change.

Tips we can all learn from

What things can we do to start off? We all rely so much on a life full of plastic, disposables, one-use products, high emissions and unsustainable food sources that it’s like a rollercoaster that would be painful to jump off without slowing down first. Going cold turkey never encourages or helps anyone. So I thought I’d compile a small list for myself and for others trying to turn over a new leaf to a more eco-friendly life. I wanted to go into detail for each of these but if I did I’d be here forever! If you want me to do individual blog posts exploring the transition of eliminating certain things or any product reviews please let me know in the comments!

  1. Stop buying small plastic bottled drinks
  2. Stop buying makeup wipes
  3. Cut meat down as much as possible
  4. Also cut out dairy.
  5. Litter pick
  6. Invest in package free shower/bath products
  7. Stop buying disposable razors
  8. Go on a clothes shopping ban for a month 
  9. If you want to shop, go secondhand
  10. Print less
  11. Use a reusable bag for your shopping
  12. Walk or cycle
  13. Pick up package-free produce 
  14. Fix broken clothes instead of throwing out

I could go on and on but I don’t want to make it so incredibly daunting that both me and you are too tired to try. If all of us could look into at least 5 of the changes on this list, imagine what amazing benefits we could be giving to the planet? Obviously at the end of the day your health, your clarity and looking after yourself and the people around you will be a bigger benefit and that’s why I will never preach to myself or others the idea of going cold turkey or spending tons of money on products or lifestyle changes that they are not ready for. But making small steps towards a more sustainable lifestyle? That’s always an amazing step and you should be incredibly proud of yourself.

21.01.17 – Central Vegan Festival

Hello lovely world,

So today me and my gorgeous friend Natt popped into Manchester to visit the Central Vegan Festival that was taking place! Manchester was extremely busy today and I’m glad to know one of the many things going on today was the Women’s March taking place. Now I’m gutted I couldn’t go, mainly cause I left it to late in the day to make it and my anxiety was acting up a bit so I was wary about going into big crowds but I hope in future I can attend more marches. Of course, Manchester’s march wasn’t as massive as Washington’s but I am so proud to see how many people attended the march in my hometown. It makes me so proud and even feel a little bit more optimistic that I know so many women of all types – black, Asian, Jewish, Muslim, white, disabled, gay, bisexual, trans, cisgender, mothers, single women, elderly women, teenagers etc. etc. are standing strong and looking out for each other after the news of Trump coming into presidency in the US. All the images and videos of marches around the world fill me with hope that so many people want to fight against the despairing, patriarchal presidency taking place.

I recommend taking a look at the images and videos on social media just by searching #WhyIMarch or #WomensMarch. It’s truly inspiring.

The vegan festival also took place in Manchester today and it’s my first proper vegan festival that I’ve attended. It was quite small and humble but very crowded and well-attended! It had that festival feeling where you’re shuffling around slowly and taking everything in, but I really enjoyed it despite the slow movement! There was tons of food stalls serving fresh vegan meals and although I couldn’t eat things from every stall I managed to try a gorgeous slice of ‘pepperoni’ pizza from Vegan Pizza Co.’s stall and I also treated myself to a batch of loaded nachos from Mex It Up‘s stall.

The staff at both stalls were also super lovely! Next up me and Natt had a lovely look around the other stalls, I recognised a stall for Wear Your Voice UK, who do really nice vegan and anti-cruelty prints on t-shirts and jumpers. I already own two that I’ve bought online but it was really exciting seeing them at a stall in person.

There was also a very cute stall there from a shop named Rogue Gypsy who did crystals and crystal jewellery. Now I’m a sucker for anything with crystals on so I had to buy something and me and Natt ended up deciding to get matching necklaces (cause we cute)! The man at the stall was super lovely and even told us about the crystals on our necklaces, and gave us a little slip with facts about the crystal with our necklaces.

Finally, of course, comes the snack haul – because I love food and I can’t help hauling vegan snacks. I managed to nab up some vegan sweet treats from Ananda Food‘s and Forgot the Egg‘s stall which was exciting, as well as picking up some other treats as seen below!

#WorldAnimalDay and what you can do as an animal lover!

Several times I believe I’ve tried to engrave into my blog and writing that I sometimes struggle sticking with lifestyles such as vegan or even sometimes vegetarian. If I could switch off all my cravings, comfort food, deficiencies, illnesses and have a steady income I would definitely go vegan but sometimes for me and others it’s not always easy to 100% switch to a lifestyle and for some people it’s harder than others. I’ve always been a firm believer that vegans, vegetarians or meat eaters/omnivores shouldn’t force each other’s ‘beliefs’ down each others throats as it is counterproductive and doesn’t always spread the education and facts that people need to hear and instead becomes an ableist, stereotypical mess of joking and narrow-mindedness. Every human being is different underneath the surface and it does more harm than good to angrily assume why someone does the things they do. It’s better to ask questions and discuss than to yell words like ‘murderer’ or ‘hippie’ at each other without actually making any sort of productive change. Regarding my view on that, it means I’m very serious about making sure I never push my boundaries when discussing my views on being vegan or vegetarian and be as honest as possible; an example could be that I’ll admit, yes, sometimes I mess up and eat meat on some days or I’ll eat a chocolate/sweet gift from someone not regarding the dairy in it but at the same time I buy non-dairy milk in a carton for when I make myself tea or food that requires milk so that I reduce my dairy intake/purchases.

Today is ‘World Animal Day’ according to Twitter and obviously it is trending because we share our planet with these creatures. People love all sorts of animals when growing up whether it just be a domesticated pet or even wildlife creatures. Children are taught about these beautiful creatures growing up and it tends to be one of the core things humans relate to; you meet someone and you might ask what their favourite of something is and that could be the question ‘oh, what is your favourite animal?’. Unfortunately growing up you’re never really taught what can happen to the creatures we share our planets with and adults tip toe around the discussion with children because I think most adults don’t want to admit to the knowledge of it either. Nevertheless, it’s there and it doesn’t start or end with say, farm animals, it’s also wildlife, sealife, domestic pets and the list probably goes on in more detail. I think it should be discussed with teenagers and young adults what stuff you can start doing when growing up that has less of a negative impact on animals, much like we are taught to walk instead of drive places or switch the lights off in a room after using it to reduce our carbon footprint. I’d like to see ‘little things to help animals’ promoted a lot more and in more detail than just sending off small donations to charities and that’s that.

#1: Choose one day a week to go meat-free.

I will sympathise only slightly with people who declare ‘I couldn’t go vegetarian, I love meat too much!’, when told they should stop eating meat. It can be relatively easy to stop eating meat products when you put your mind to it. A great idea, inspired by the movement ‘Meatless Monday’, is to pick one day a week that you pledge to just not eat, purchase or consume meat products all day. It doesn’t have to be a Monday it could be any day you prefer, but it’s a great start in reducing your meat intake.

#2: Buy Cruelty-Free beauty dupes.

Unfortunately a lot of beauty companies still get away with animal testing and using ingredients that are derived from animals. Some well-known names include L’Oreal, Benefit, MAC, Maybelline, Revlon, Clearasil and Herbal Essences. I’m definitely not saying if you own any products from these brands to run screaming to the nearest bin and chuck them all in as that is wasting a product and the packaging. The best thing to do is when you finally run out or get rid of said product to look for a dupe in a cruelty-free brand. Some really easy finds include Superdrug’s own brand, Barry M, B. by Superdrug, BH Cosmetics, Lush and Kat Von D. If you are ever unsure of something, look for the little ‘Cruelty Free’ rabbit on the packaging or give it a quick google search as there are so many useful blogs and pages from the company ready to help you. If a company’s stance on cruelty-free practice ever seems dodgy to you, just go with your instinct.

#3: Support adopting pets.

Obviously this idea can only really come into play if you are planning on getting a pet anytime soon. There is plenty of benefits to adopting a pet that include giving a pet that could no longer have a home with it’s old family a new life and home, some pets in adoption shelters may have been taken from a cruel past and you are giving it a chance to experience love and comfort which is such a lovely thought. Always look at chances to help out people who may have had an unexpected litter come into their lives – you know when someone you used to go to high school with advertises on facebook that their cat just had lots of kittens and they need a new home? Definitely support that, it means that the young kittens can grow up in a home with care instead of being separated from it’s litter and put in a home with tons of other cats. Unfortunately in that scenario, if the owner needs to get people to adopt the litter cause they can’t look after them all, both ways the kitten will be separated from it’s mum/litter, but I think it’d be a much better chance for you and the kitten than the hassle of it being put in a shelter and having to wait to be adopted.

#4: Find your local vegan/vegetarian cafe.

Support your local vegan and vegetarian establishments! You’ll be able to discover new food and meals that don’t cost the earth and help work towards encouraging the trend of vegan cooking in the industry. I’ve noticed in the past few years more restaurants and cafes introducing different types of non-dairy milk or even non-dairy cheese in meals. A good example is the vegan stuff restaurant Zizzi is starting to bring into their menu! I believe it all comes down to supporting independent animal-loving businesses, they are the heart of the vegan/vegetarian food industry and should be encouraged so that the word of supporting animals and the environment gets even more out there.

5 Accidentally Vegan Items and 5 I wish were

One of my favourite Instagram account findings since I took upon myself to go vegetarian and incorporate more vegan/cruelty-free stuff has been an account named AccidentallyVeganUK. They post and collect products found in the UK that are accidentally vegan – hence the name. So somehow these products don’t include any meat, gelatine, milk, cream, eggs – no animal product to be found! A lot of the finds on this page are also treats, cheap snacks; which makes it great for vegans/vegetarians/people with dairy allergies who are on a budget. I decided to share with you today some items I am so happy and surprised are vegan and 5 items I love snacking on/having in the cupboard that I wish were vegan. I hope this list is useful for anybody vegan, vegetarian or omnivore!

Favourite Cruelty-Free Products in May

I can’t believe it’s already June and it’s like 3 months until I start University and 7 months until Christmas – where does the time go? So in honour of it being the end of May and that June has graced us with her presence; here’s a quick article of my favourite cruelty-free products this month!

1.Anastasia Beverley Hills Dipbrow Pomade

I’m honestly so surprised and thankful that this product has the cruelty-free stamp! I’ve seen this brow gel used by many makeup artists/fanatics on youtube and whilst envying their perfect looking eyebrows, I decided to treat myself and get it. I’m so glad I did as I think it makes my brows look way better and more textured, plus the application is so easy. You do need to separately invest in a brush for using it and I literally just picked up a cheap seventeen angled eye brush from Boots and it applies fabulously. I bought mine on Beauty Bay for £15.00, I’m quite glad about the price as I think you definitely get what you pay for.

2. DIRTY Springwash Showergel from Lush Cosmetics

As mentioned a million times in past blogposts, Lush is one of my all time favourite stores and when I’m not able to stock up on their Winter Limited Editon shower gel which is Snow Fairy, my favourite showergel to invest in, especially during the summer, is Dirty. Now I only got a good whiff of their Dirty fragrance last year as one of my friends wears the body spray from Lush, but I absolutely love it; it’s so minty and almost cooling, so in showergel form it really works wonders on hot days or after exercise, it also has quite a calming side to it’s scent so I love using it in showers before bed too! I paid about £16 for a big bottle of it so it’ll last me a good few months however you can get smaller bottles in Lush for around £4.95!

3. Superdrug Instant Cooling Spray

In regards to my previous blogpost, it’s been absolutely boiling some days recently. Either that or when I go to the gym I end up so humid and hot that it feels rather gross. Back in the days at high school and such, I’d always try to counteract my body reacting to heat and sweating by spraying tons of Impulse body spray on my school uniform as if that would do anything. However all I probably did was make the top layer of my uniform smell kind of fragranced for a few minutes and choke everybody else in the room with the smell of artificial vanilla. One day impulsively on the way to my boyfriends, I remember popping into superdrug for something small like pads or dry shampoo; something I probably forgot to pack and it was a very warm day so I decided to grab superdrug’s own cooling spray. As the majority, if not all, of superdrug’s own; the spray is cruelty-free stamped! I like spraying it on my wrists, inner elbows, forehead and neck if it gets too warm for me and it really does cool me down!

4. Fritz-kola Stevia & Fritz-limo Melon

Unfortunately this ‘fave of the month’ might be a little less obtainable than the others, but I wanted to give it a special mention because at my lovely new job in a certain beloved vegan cafe/shop in Manchester; I am consuming these drinks so much recently if I want a soft drink! V Revolution in Manchester sell a range of fully vegan soft drink brand Fritz! Their drinks also contain all natural ingredients including their caffeine. My favourites are definitely the Fritz-limo melon and when I’m in mood for something that’s a bit more like coca-cola or pepsi, I go for the Fritz-kola stevia! I’m still intrigued to try Fritz-Sugar Free and the plain out Fritz-Kola so I’ll have to fill you all in if those are just as tasty!

Small Steps to Cruelty Free

Sometimes I feel very contradicting whenever I write about pro-veggie or cruelty free stuff in blog posts, cause in all honesty I do still use or consume products that are probably very against that ethic. I still have a few makeup products knocking around that are Maybelline or Benefit – both of which aren’t confirmed cruelty free, and I do still eat chocolate or products now and again that contain milk or eggs. I never confirm myself as vegan although I am interested in the research and evidence behind it and I know deep down, transitioning to a vegan lifestyle might benefit me in a lot of ways.

However my beliefs are mainly that if people are open to trying more pro-veggie and cruelty free products and reducing their ‘footprint’, if you could call it that. If someone goes vegetarian and uses more and more cruelty free products – that is better than nothing. If people go vegan for two days a week, that’s pretty impressive to me. I think transitioning to a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle isn’t something anyone can just do. It requires money, time to prepare meals that are completely vegan, research and such. So I decided to write this blog post to introduce some small steps for different ‘areas’ in your daily life that you could switch out products to be more cruelty free/pro-animal.

Kitchen – Butter/Margarine

Vitalite is only £1 in most supermarkets and is a full tub of dairy-free, sunflower oil based margarine. It’s an easy, food swap out that is vegan because it literally tastes no different to usual butter. In fact I personally prefer it because it feels a lot lighter than butter when used on toast, for example.

Living Room/Decoration – Wax Melt

So these might be a little bit pricey to some, but if you’re a fan of Yankee Candles or decorations like such. This little UK based shop on Etsy called CarolineJaneCandles has a lovely selection of vegan wax melts and candles made with natural soy wax. The candles are a little bit pricier but the wax melts go at £1.50 so you can’t go wrong! They come in lovely scents as well, my favourite is the shop’s cinnamon whirl melts as the smell of bakeries and pastries are just divine.

Bathroom – Toothpaste

I have mentioned Kingfisher Toothpastes on a blog post in the past, and I still stand by the toothpaste now. Lush cosmetics is one of the favourites for many cruelty-free shoppers. They are very committed to their ethics and a lot of their products are vegan. The bath products of Lush are super popular and a great treat for yourself or friends however I want to promote the excellence of their lip balm tins. They are quite pricey but last a long time and definitely moisturise your lips. My favourite lip balm by them is Honey Trap because the ‘flavour’ is so lovely however they are only really ‘cruelty-free’. They are not labelled vegan because of the honey ingredient however Lush do many vegan alternatives like the lip balm ‘None of Your Beeswax‘.
